Portraits at the Barn!
PORTRAITS AT TED’S PLACE.
Camera Club member Ted Dowse has converted his large barn into a photographic studio complete with various backgrounds, electronic studio lights, and a changing room for models.
For a recent Camera Club meeting Ted invited all the camera club members to his studio for an evening portrait session.
Five attractive young ladies acted as models with ten-year-old Chloe being the youngest, chaperoned by her grandmother. Camera Club member Hannah, together with Pandora, Vicky and Jasmine all posed for the photographers.
In addition to Ted’s electronic flash set-up, President John West set up some traditional tungsten lights and a classic background. To prove his claim that effective portraits can be obtained with simple lights John used ordinary domestic light bulbs in simple reflectors.
John stayed with his rig, advising members on the best techniques to use with his set-up. He advised digital photographers to alter the ‘White Balance’ setting in their cameras to match the tungsten lights.
To further illustrate that good portraits can be taken at very low light levels, a table was laid out with a candelabra holding just four candles. Young Chloe sat at the table and gazed into the candle flames. Award winning photographer Duncan Hill stood by to help and advise. The result was some very romantic and atmospheric images.
The twenty five club members had a very enjoyable evening with a good atmosphere as club members discussed the merits of their camera equipment and the available lightng methods.
Roy Featherstone and John West [both professional photographers] were on hand to advise on how to avoid harsh shadows on the face, the positioning of the hands and the fall of the models hair around the faces.
At the close President John thanked Ted for the use of his studio and equipment and the girls for being such patient and cooperative models.
