Even though I’ve travelled previously in Nepal, nothing quite prepared me for the assault on the senses on my arrival in India, my first destination in January 2017, made even more spellbinding by its diffuse light and colour.

From Zero to Zero

In South East Asia, I visited Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia and Indonesia. With the help of a guide and driver, I could visit some of the most iconic places in the world and also focus ‘on the more authentic’ - contrasting cultures, many shaped by communism and conflict.

In the vast expanse of the Australian Outback, through to the temperate rainforests and volcanic terrain of New Zealand, I began to understand how the landscape has impacted upon indigenous people. And in the national parks of the United States, amongst the big vistas and vast skies of the southern states, I was blessed with witnessing normally barren and unforgiving deserts in full spring bloom.

A stopover in Iceland, a land forged by fire and ice, before returning to Greenwich, four months after first setting off, helped to complete ‘the circle’.

The challenge now has been to choose the very best images from nearly 12,000 to represent my time behind the lens.
